Government gives go ahead to Azim Premji varsity
The first private university in the State, Azim Premji
University, which envisages building teaching talents and offering
specialised training for educators, will come into effect through the
ordinance route.
The State Cabinet on Friday gave its nod for
promulgating an ordinance to provide statutory backing for setting up
the private university. The Cabinet also gave its go ahead for
promulgating an ordinance to set up the Karnataka Samskrita-Veda
University.
According to the provision of the Azim Premji
University Ordinance, the university will provide teaching, training,
research and development in the fields of elementary, secondary,
education management and policy. Besides, courses in education in
science, social science, humanities and management will also be
offered.
A security deposit of Rs 25 crore will have to be
deposited by the Azim Premji Foundation, the social arm of the IT major
Wipro, for setting up the university.
The Governor of the state
will be the Visitor of the University. The Visitor can call for records
of the varsity and pass necessary directions. However, the state
government will have no role in the appointment of officers. But in
case of mismanagement and maladministration, the government can
interfere.
