UNICEF, Foundation will boost education
Bangalore: The United Nations
Childrens Education Fund (UNICEF), the Karnataka government and the Azim Premji
Foundation has decided to integrate its resources to promote education in
north-east Karnataka.
The child-friendly school initiative, which was
unveiled here on Friday on the sidelines of the release of World of Children
report 2004 is a Rs 73.05 million project, which will be implemented over a
period of three years.
Of this, the state government will provide Rs
35.84 million, Unicef will support Rs 24.67 million while Azim Premji Foundation
will fund Rs 12.54 million.
According to a Unicefpress release, under
the initiative, between October 2003 and December 2004, each of the 542 schools
in Shorapur and Deodurg blocks of Gulbarga and Raichur districts respectively
will develop its own school improvement plan based on quality specifications to
ensure universalisation of elementary education and quality learning in the
school.
By June 2004, a comprehensive base line consisting of current
infrastructure status and learning achievements by students in these schools
will be in place.
By 2004, a regular system of results-based
monitoring with regular interface between community representatives and
education administrators will be in place.
By December 2005, the
essential elements of the quality package will be implemented in grades one to
four in 542 schools resulting in teachers and school development management
committees of 50 per cent of the schools.
By December 2007, key
elements of the package and learning guarantee programme will be translated into
a standard "child friendly school index" that can by used by children, teachers
and educational planners.
The World of Children report 2004 was
released by Maria Calivis, UNICEF representative to India.
