Bangalore: The United Nations Childrens Education Fund (UNICEF), the Karnataka government and the Azim Premji Foundation has decided to integrate its resources to promote education in north-east Karnataka.

The child-friendly school initiative, which was unveiled here on Friday on the sidelines of the release of World of Children report 2004 is a Rs 73.05 million project, which will be implemented over a period of three years.

Of this, the state government will provide Rs 35.84 million, Unicef will support Rs 24.67 million while Azim Premji Foundation will fund Rs 12.54 million.

According to a Unicefpress release, under the initiative, between October 2003 and December 2004, each of the 542 schools in Shorapur and Deodurg blocks of Gulbarga and Raichur districts respectively will develop its own school improvement plan based on quality specifications to ensure universalisation of elementary education and quality learning in the school.

By June 2004, a comprehensive base line consisting of current infrastructure status and learning achievements by students in these schools will be in place.

By 2004, a regular system of results-based monitoring with regular interface between community representatives and education administrators will be in place.

By December 2005, the essential elements of the quality package will be implemented in grades one to four in 542 schools resulting in teachers and school development management committees of 50 per cent of the schools.

By December 2007, key elements of the package and learning guarantee programme will be translated into a standard "child friendly school index" that can by used by children, teachers and educational planners.
